MCA Youth Formalizes Support for “Tangkap Azam Baki” Rally; Demands Urgent Institutional Reform

News by Maahgeshan

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 April 2026 – The MCA Youth Central Committee has officially announced its support for the upcoming “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally, organized by Bersih and scheduled to take place at Dataran Merdeka on 25 April.

In a strategic move reflecting the wing\'s stance on governance, MCA Youth confirmed it will deploy representatives to the assembly to underscore its commitment to national anti-corruption reforms.

The movement’s support is predicated on three core demands: the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate alleged "corporate mafia" activities within enforcement agencies, a comprehensive probe into the shareholding allegations involving MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, and the immediate implementation of institutional reforms within the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In a formal statement, MCA Youth highlighted that public concern has transcended individual allegations, evolving into a broader skepticism regarding the transparency and independence of Malaysia’s enforcement institutions.

The wing noted that the lack of progress updates—more than a month after the formation of a special committee—and the government’s perceived silence have significantly eroded public trust in the national anti-corruption framework.

“The government must honor its commitment to institutional reform by accelerating measures to ensure that anti-corruption bodies are truly independent, transparent, and accountable to Parliament, rather than remaining subject to executive influence,” the statement read.

MCA Youth further urged the Pakatan Harapan-led administration to fulfill its reform pledges, specifically regarding the appointment mechanism of the MACC Chief Commissioner.

The wing proposes that the position should no longer be determined solely by the Prime Minister but should instead be subject to parliamentary oversight and approval to ensure effective checks and balances.

The wing emphasized that only an investigation led by individuals with proven judicial experience and absolute independence can restore credibility. Without such measures, internal investigations risk being perceived as politically motivated or lacks the necessary rigor to satisfy public scrutiny.

As a key institution entrusted with oversight of other public bodies, MCA Youth maintains that the MACC must itself be subject to stringent independent oversight. The wing has called upon the government to utilize a Parliamentary Select Committee to develop a comprehensive reform framework. Key recommendations include:

- Executive Independence: Ensuring the appointment of the Chief Commissioner is independent of the Prime Minister’s Office.

- Legislative Scrutiny: Subjecting leadership appointments to parliamentary approval.

- Accountability Mechanisms: Strengthening audit and public accountability frameworks to prevent the potential abuse of power at the highest levels.

In concluding its statement, MCA Youth asserted that if the Unity Government is sincere in its anti-corruption rhetoric, it must address the structural shortcomings within the MACC.

The wing encouraged Malaysians from all walks of life to participate in the rally responsibly and peacefully, describing the event as a vital platform for citizens to demand a clean, fair, and credible investigative system.

By aligning with this civil society initiative, MCA Youth signals a shift toward a more robust, reform-oriented political discourse, placing the onus of integrity squarely on the current administration’s institutional policies.- Alaiolinews
